Yuen Long Dim Sum

I think this place used to be a furniture shop, but sometime over the summer, a new restaurant opened up right next to the Yuen Long West Bus Terminal.

I've only been here for dim sum, but, they seem like one of those restaurants that hosts big family banquets.

I'm talking about Hang Heung Seafood Restaurant:
Location
Shop L, G/F - 1/F Shun Fat Mansion
17 Kik Yeung Road
Yuen Long

Hours
7:00 am - 11:30 pm daily

Tel.
3568 - 9138

How to get here:
1.  From Long Ping MTR Station Exit B, walk along the skyway all the way to the the Yuen Long West Bus Terminal
2.  The restaurant can be seen on the left side (2 - 3 minutes walk)
3.  Walk down the stairs to the Yuen Long West Bus Terminal
4.  7-Eleven will be on the left side
5.  Walk past 7-Eleven
6.  Hang Heung Seafood Restaurant is left around the corner from 7-Eleven (30 second - 1 minute walk)

This place is like your usual dim sum restaurant.  When you first sit down, the wait staff ask you what type of tea that you want.  When you get your teapot and hot water pot, then you sit and clean the cups, bowls, spoons, etc.

I was told that it was a sort of tradition.  Or it was just apart of the eating culture.  When we eat out at the dai pai dongs, we also wash all of our eat-ware with hot tea.  I think, nowadays, it is just to rinse the dishwashing machine detergent off, perhaps...

This place gets pretty packed in the mornings for dim sum.  Like most dim sum places, as well, there are tables where you are sat with other patrons.  It's quite the fun experience.  We just read newspapers, people watch, and enjoy the morning of drinking tea and eating.

To order the dim sum dishes, you usually have to tick a bunch of boxes of the dishes that you like.  I don't read Chinese, but my husband does.  So, usually he orders all the usual things that I love.  Since there were four of us this morning, we were able to try a bunch more dishes.

Some new dishes that we tried…rice noodles with side sauces...

…chicken's feet…which one of my friends got me into when I last went to Tim Ho Wan with her and her husband.

…fish stomach with bits of shrimp…

…and a veggie dumpling…

It's always nice to try out new dim sum dishes.

I've been to Hang Heung Seafood Restaurant quite a few mornings since the place opened.  It's sort of become a regular dim sum joint for us.  So, if you are looking for a dim sum place other than the Yuen Long Plaza, this is a good one to try.  The dishes are quite inexpensive, the environment is pretty chilled, and there is a beautiful "display" of fish as you enter the eating area.

***Display = fish on display that will later be cooked up

Yuen Long Eats #3: 許祥昌食店 (Hui Cheung Cheong Canteen)

I think I mentioned this before, but Yuen Long is known for food...or so people tell me.  Today, my husband and I went for one of the local noodle shops.  It's called 許祥昌食店 or Hui Cheung Cheong Canteen.  This one is near the Yuen Long West Bus Terminus.  It sits across from the Secondary School near the Yuen Long Plaza.

Location:  Shop B, G/F Shun Fat Building, 17 Kik Yueng Road, Yuen Long

Opening Days:  Daily

Opening Hours:  10 am - 10 pm

This place always seems busy during the day.  I think it is because of the nearby school lunch rushes.  Even on the weekends, it seems like this place needs a 5 - 7 minutes wait to be seated.  This was the first time that I went there in the evening, around closing time, and have seen it so quiet.

It was nice to see all the ladies joking around at the end of their work day!  They were more attentive and willing to have fun with the customers!  It was definitely a nice change to when they are in full-on working mode.

We got two all-in-one noodle bowls.  And they totally hit the spot.

This is the kind of fast food that I love!

Eats Week: Yuen Long Dai Pai Dongs

The fourth installment of Eats Week will be introducing the wonderfulness that is the Dai Pai Dong.  Dai Pai Dongs are so very quintessentially Hong Kong!  I feel like that is my catch phrase for everything I love about this city.

A Dai Pai Dong is basically a restaurant that is outdoors.  There are dozens of tables set up, people take your orders, your food is cooked out of a rented kitchen space, and you can find some of the local-est of local foods there.  You can find Dai Pai Dongs emerging at the dinner hours in cooked food markets, under bridges, along rivers, blocking pathways, and, in my case, near the Yuen Long West Bus Terminus.

We went here for dinner, which was a great idea because, this particular Dai Pai Dong is sheltered.  And, if any of you are experiencing the torrential rains, monsoon winds, and ground-striking lightning that is our weather recently, you would appreciate a little shelter.  But the temperature is mighty fine these days, so it is nice to be able to eat outdoors.  The thunderstorms just make the experience feel quite romantic.

Yuen Long West Bus Terminus Dai Pai Dong

What:  By day, this space sells congee, rice rolls, and noodles.  By night, this place becomes one of the most happening Dai Pai Dongs in Yuen Long.

Where:  There are two Dai Pai Dongs at the bus terminus (I think there may even be three).  Our Dai Pai Dong had yellow table cloths, while the other had blue.  It's a science, eh!  And this specific one I'm blogging about is nearer the public toilets.

Hours:  I have seen Dai Pai Dongs being set up from 5pm (for the incredibly hungry) and being closed down around 1am (maybe even later on the weekends) for those party people.

Suggestions:  Bring a Cantonese-reading and speaking friend with you to help you order.  But, you can also be adventurous and just point!

The menu and our table cloth of spilt tea.  I love how you can be free to be messy here.  I mean, it's difficult to pour tea into a cup sometimes!  Do you know what I mean???

Pork and Leek Dish
Eel (we were feeling adventurous with this option)

Morning Glory and Pork

The food is kind of greasy, but the atmosphere is always so lively, especially on Saturday nights when everyone is just out to have fun.  I have seen some crazy-drunk yelling matches in my days too.  There is always excitement in the air.  And that, mixed with authentic local foods, big tables to fit your entire group of friends, and a round of beers is awesome!

Over The Weekend: Yuen Long Eats #1

Yuen Long is know for food.  Since living out here for the past few years, I have found my share of favorited-frequented establishments.  One place that I love because of the quick service is Beijing Shui Gau, which is located right at the Yuen Long West Bus Terminus.  It's shui gau (Cantonese), jiaozi (Mandarin), or dumpling in English...

Beijing Shui Gau
It was my time in Beijing that really got me hooked on shui gau (jiaozi).  It was THE THING to eat on a cold day and they came in so many flavors.  But, the best shui gau, in my humble opinion, is the leek and pork variety.  The easy thing about Beijing Shui Gau is that they have "sets," which is a bowl of the leek and pork shui gau with a cup of soy milk.

The menu is all in Chinese, so take someone who can read Chinese with you or just play roulette with the menu

Everything is made fresh and hot

The place is small, but people are always in and out like a flash

Baby Bok Choy

Siu Long Bao (Pork Dumplings with soup inside)
A great place to check out and feel like a local!
