Back at the Red Brick House

Over the weekend, we trekked down to Kam Sheung Road.

It's only a stop away from Yuen Long and it is also the place that I enjoy visiting the most because of the awesome year-long flea market that is along the station.

Yup, it's that time of year again when I start thinking about Halloween decorations around my apartment, Thanksgiving dishware that I might need this November, and Christmas ornaments that we should be picking out come this December!

I love the Fall!

The weather has been lovely these past two days.  It's been feeling quite like the Seattle summer, crisp, cool days.  Not to mention…the overcast skies.  The walk from the Kam Sheung Road MTR Station to the Red Brick House is such pleasant stroll that totally makes me feel like I'm not in Hong Kong anymore.

For those who haven't visited the Red Brick House, it is a little barn that is tucked away on Kam Sheung Road.  It's easily identifiable by the public restroom that sits right in front of it.  But, once you see the broken clock fixture on the barn behind the public restrooms, you'll be able to see that there are shops of all sorts of curious and hidden gems waiting to be loomed over.

We were here a week or so ago trying to see if the Halloween decorations were being shelved, but there wasn't much.  This time, we went to visit, there still wasn't much Halloween stuff.  There are, though, a bunch of really awesome Christmas things that are dispersed throughout the market stalls.

The Red Brick House is filled with a bunch of really awesome things.  It sort of reminds me of a swap meet, but with a "Blast from the Past" sort of feel.  A lot of the things that are sold are not the most updated of things (like the games below).

There are some new shops that do have some pretty awesome handicraft things, which I am totally in to.  So, there is a good mix of awesome oldies and some really awesome newbies!

(Pictured below) I've talked about this shop before, but it is my favorite place to get most of our holiday decorations!

During the summer months, this place is really busy with tourists.  A  few bus loads of people stop by to check out the shops and also have lunch in the Red Brick House.  We stopped by around 5pm, so it was pretty empty, which is what we like.

But, during the winter months, the flow of people definitely is a lot less than in the summer time.

I cannot say how much I love this time of year and taking my annual trips to Kam Sheung Road to pick up my holiday gear.  It's so wonderful to have something so WONDERFUL nearby.

Amazing Finds: Kam Sheung Road

Last weekend, we headed out to Kam Sheung Road to see if the Halloween decorations were on the shelves at The Red Brick House.  I wanted to share some amazing finds because EVERY visit to the Kam Tin area is laced with amazing NEW FINDS.

1.  I don't know if I mentioned this before, but the jiao zi at The Red Brick House is my absolute favorite.  We were sitting at one of the tables and I noticed a note taped to it.  My husband translated it as:

To all visitors:
To be hygienic, please do not put your pets on the table.

We appreciate your cooperation.
Thank you.

Little touches like this make me love visiting this place.  Reminds me of Seattle's quirkiness!

2.  There is an amazing curios shop at The Red Brick House.  It's where I get a lot of my seasonal decorations.  Not only are the Halloween Decorations out in full regalia, but the shelves have been stocked with quite a bit of OWL-y things.  It's a nice addition to the Halloween theme...and not so obvious.

3.  I found this ancient television with a pretty recent Disney-inspired casing.  I didn't know they made televisions like this anymore.

4.  In Beijing, I used to see retro-Made-in-China toys all the time.  They were always at the local tourist shops on Nan Luo Gu Xiang.  Spotting them in the window of one of the toy shops was a surprise.  These make really great gifts for adults (hand raised!) who love to decorate their homes with retro wind-up things.

5.  This is old news, but the leather shop moved locations.  Now it's at the entry way of the Red Brick House.

6.  Whenever I walk around the area, I always check out the village houses.  MY DREAM in life is to own my own home.  And there is one for rent...brand new...which makes me drool.

7.  The second most amazing thing about Kam Sheng Road is the flea market at the MTR exit.  It's only open on the weekends, but they always have amazing things to look at.

8.  Lastly, I wanted to share our amazing purchased finds.  We got

(1) a Nick Vujicic buoy that says, "Get back up when life knocks you down,"
(2) a set of drawers for my desk,
(3) an egg timer for those times when you need it,
(4) and an old copy of a Time's 100 New Scientific Discoveries.

Places like this, make me happy to be living so far up here in the New Territories.  It's always an adventure in discovering things.

Traveling Tuesday: Kam Sheung Road

You know how things CHANGE YOUR LIFE?  Well, here's one of my LIFE ALTERING MOMENTS in a nutshell!

A few years back, my husband's friends moved out to Kam Sheung Road.  They invited us over for lunch and, I'll tell ya, I will forever thank them for their thoughtfulness.  That was the day that I discovered the "Flea Market" in front of Kam Sheung Road MTR station and the Red Brick House.

The Flea Market is amazing for people like me!  It is filled with cute dogs to pet, stalls of coffee, stalls of bohemian clothing, stalls of incense, stalls of crafts, stalls of secondhand treasures, and they also are residence to a really nice plant nursery.

Both the Flea Market and the Red Brick House are only open on the weekends!  So, it is a great trip to take out to Kam Sheung Road if you want lunch and an afternoon of knick-knack shopping!

Along the way to the Red Brick House, we stopped by this restaurant for lunch.  I call it the Choy Restaurant!  It is one of those really local restaurants that serve only a few people at a time.  They shop for fresh produce and food daily.  And from what they find at the food markets, they set their menu for the day according to what the markets offer.

Menu of the day

Pumpkin Soup

Taro cakes

Pork in Shrimp Paste

Ginger Ice Cream

The Red Brick House is awesome to visit on the weekends, especially when it is Christmas.  There are many little shops like the Flea Market at the MTR station.  It used to be a huge barn, which the Kam Tin residents converted into a curios market.  You can find a lot of things to decorate your home with, toys for children, good jiaozi, organic foods, leather goods, tech goods, and even clogs!

I always find something interesting every time I stop by.
