Rural Committee Road, Mui Wo

I was out walking around Rural Committee Road today just to see what was out there.  Some things I found…

1.  I had forgotten this place was here!  The last time I was in Mui Wo was when my husband and I did a staycation:  Lantau Holiday.  We'd been wandering around town and came across the Mui Wo Culture and Exhibition Centre.  It is small, but it does have some pretty interesting facts about Mui Wo.

2.  I like how the area is quite empty of people!  It's so different from Yuen Long…when even at 8 am, the streets can be pretty crammed.

3.  I found some really nice paper hangings that made me think of when I'd used to keep my Christmas decorations up until February!

4.  There is a really awesome florist/plant shop on Rural Committee Road.  The signs are in both English and Chinese, so it's easy to see what plants are being sold:  Rose Mary anyone!

5.  One of the coolest shop fronts is this arts and craft workshop.  It reminds me of Accro Coffee, in Yuen Long…near Long Ping station.  When Accro moved to it's current location, they fitted their cafe with an outdoor mini patio.  It's actually a really nice place to chill…if there are no smokers around!  I really dig that rustic look!

6.  I also discovered that there were a minimum of 3 churches that I've found so far…two on Rural Committee Road and one right next to the Soft and Hard shop near the ferry pier area.

7.  I thought it was funny how this backdoor was PERHAPS a front door to this learning centre??

8.  I know that Cheung Chau has a lot of tuk tuk type of bikes, but Mui Wo has their fair share of them as well.  It's really a nice way to get around these days with the sun cover.

9.  Gotta love them dawgs padding around everywhere!

10.  Lastly, I bumped into the local library at the Mui Wo Municipal Services Building.  I might really check it out one of these days and rate the English book selection!

Playing on the Playground

When I was really young, I remember my dad driving us to school really early in the morning.  There was a swing set right next to the parking lot.  We would swing and play around the area and see the sun rise sometimes.  One day, someone walked up to us and told us that they'd been listening to us swinging on this rusty swings for days now.  It had woken that person up like an alarm clock!

After that, we didn't play on the swings, but just sat in the car…

When I switched schools, my dad told me that I had to make new friends.  When I asked him, "how?"  He said, "Just walk up to someone and ask them if they wanted to be my friend."  At recess at my new school, I walked up to some girl that I had noticed in my class and asked her, "Do you want to be my friend?"  She said, "Sure."  I spent the rest of the recess hour just following her around on the monkey bars, slides, etc.  When the bell rang she turned around and said, "Stop following me around!"

Fond fond memories!  Ha!

Anyhow, I was checking out my new neighborhood and noticed that the playground (which wasn't here when I first visited Mui Wo back in the day) was up and running.

The sign says that it's meant for children 5 - 12, but I think I can get away with having a swing now and then!

Mui Wo Government Offices

We've made the big move and are in the process of relocating everything else that is not categorized under "kitchen, living room, bedroom and etc."  The major things that we had to do was reallocate our Yuen Long mailing address to our new Mui Wo address.

Because I had to take a trip to the post office, I thought it'd be beneficial to those who are curious to know the who, what, where, when, why and how of what I was looking for today, which was mainly the post office.

The Mui Wo post office is located in the Mui Wo Government Offices building.

Mui Wo Government Offices Info:
Location
2 Ngan Kwong Wan Road
Mui Wo, Lantau Island

Within this complex are two of the things that I will have to visit the most in the coming months:

1.  Mui Wo Post Office

2.  Mui Wo Maternal and Child Health Centre

The post office was easy to find…as it was the first building that I ran into after walking from the ferry pier.  It's also got the giant Hong Kong post insignia that cannot be missed!  The post office opens weekdays from 9 am - 4:30 pm.  On Saturdays, it's open from 9 am - 12:30 pm.

While waiting for the post office to open, and…if you are in dire need of stamps and to get something mailed, there is a stamp machine located right outside of the main doors.

These days, a stamp for mailing the "average" letter comes out to $1.70 hkd.

The drop box for letters is just to the side of the stamp machine.

The post office is quite small, which is a change!  Yuen Long's post office always had a line of people waiting outside to do all sorts of transactions.  The Mui Wo branch has two main counters:  (1) Speedpost/ Local Courier Post/ Parcel Collection and (2) Pay Thru Post/ Stamps/ Registration.  I'm not too sure on anything there than posting parcels, collecting parcels, and buying stamps…but, if I gain more insight, I'll probably blog about it.

While waiting at the counter, I noticed something that I'd not realized before…You can pay bills at the post office.  I had only paid bills through 7Eleven, so this was quite enlightening!  Here are some of the things you can pay (check out the image below).

Though you can purchase your own packaging or envelops, the post office also provides their own, which you can buy at the counter. A lot of information is posted up around the post office, so you can take a glance around if you do have questions…which is especially good on a busy day…when you want to just make an inquiry over what size boxes they have available!

Also…on a hot day, I think it's a great idea to stop by the post office to cool off…it's a long walk from the villages to the ferry pier…and vice versa!

The Maternal and Child Health Clinic (MCHC) is also conveniently attached to the Mui Wo Government Offices complex.  It's also right across the way from the first aid station.  I'd previously transferred my Yuen Long MCHC history to the Mui Wo one via the Yuen Long Madam Yung Fung Shee Clinic.  It's quite easy to do (just fill out a transfer sheet) and the office does the transferring for you.

The only thing I did not realize was that the Mui Wo branch is only open twice a month!  This was a huge difference from Yuen Long, which was open all the time.

The MCHC is located just to the right of the Mui Wo Post Office.  You can see the Mui Wo General Out-Patient Clinic sign as you walk along the corridor.  The MCHC is located on the first floor…

The clinic is quite small, so it is easy to find your way around.  But, you can easily spot signs directing you to the MCHC.

Today was one of the days when the clinic was closed.

Mui Wo MCHC Info (also noted in the photo below):
Open the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month
Open from 8:30 - 12:30 pm and from 2 - 4:30 pm

What is the MCHC?

As a resident of Hong Kong, I have the option of choosing to go the public route (which is a lot cheaper, medically-speaking).  The MCHC is a clinic specifically for women (under 64 years old) and children (birth until about 5 years old).  The clinic is there to provide sexual health education and care, breast awareness education (e.g., breastfeeding) and care, cervical screenings, family planning education and advice, menstration problem education and care, ante/post natal care, etc…For babies, the clinics provide check ups (e.g., baby health and development), parenting information (e.g., how to take care of a newborn, starting solids, etc) and also immunizations.

Why the MCHC?
I decided to take this route when I got pregnant, mainly because it was the most inexpensive route.  All of my check ups were free (though my taxes go to the support of public institutions like this one).  And, when I gave birth at the local government hospital, my entire experience costed me only a fraction of the price of giving birth through the private hospitals (private doctors, etc).

Benefits of the MCHC?
1.  Though there is quite a long waiting period (especially in Yuen Long), the doctors, nurses and supporting staff have always been so supportive to me.  The Yuen Long branch, especially, had such a great vibe about it.

2.  The cost of check ups and basic baby immunizations are free…and prescriptions are just a fraction of the price.

3.  They are found in most districts of Hong Kong!

Hopefully, this information proves useful for some!

Muji to Go

When did Muji to Go open in the Central Station???

Things change so much in Hong Kong…and new shops open all of the time!

I love Muji…

Muji has a minimalist type of style to it.  It's a Japanese-based franchise that sells a lifestyle:  clothing, stationery, furniture, and snacks.  It's one of the shops that I remember quite well from living in Japan.  I used to visit Muji when I was down in the train station malls (which are the most awesome malls I have ever been too).

I especially like the Muji to Go at the Hong Kong International Airport because it always has stuff that you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT NEED (night lights or air purifiers!!!)  and also stuff that YOU MIGHT HAVE FORGOTTEN TO PACK (toothbrush or scarf).

Whenever I'm at the airport, I always stop in there to just pass the time…and, as a good consequence, always find a bunch of little things that I FEEL I NEED:  stationery!!!

It's pretty awesome that it opened up in the Central/Hong Kong Island MTR Station.  I feel like I'm gonna be stopping by this shop every time I head over there…on my way to the IFC Mall!

Nursing Room @ K11 Mall

Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) is one of the busiest districts in Hong Kong.  It's where I find myself meeting with friends, going to Cantonese class…and doing quite a bit of my shopping!  When I am down here, I never really have to worry about NOT being able to find a changing table or nursing room.  They are easily found in most places that I frequent.  Harbour City, for example, has a really chic and modern nursing room found in Ocean Terminal near the Toys R Us.

One of my favorite nursing rooms to pay a visit to when I am in the area is the K11 Mall.  I'd found this nursing room a few months ago when we were having a gathering at the K11 Pizza Express.  I think that is where most parents feel quite comfortable taking their kids…anyhow, this nursing room has a lot of amenities that make my life a lot more comfortable…not to mention the baby's.

The first amenity is the air purifier, which I always appreciate!

Secondly, there is the ever necessary sink!  Some places I have been to only provide a changing pod sans the sink.  So, any nursing room with a sink is safety on the comfy side of the Nursing Room Spectrum for me.  And it's even more of a luxury if the room comes with a soap-filled dispenser and paper towels.

It's quite a compact space, which you can see from the photos, but it is nice, cozy and warm.  It is quite quiet as well, which is good for me because loud, blaring musical tunes in a nursing room aren't really my cup of tea.

There is a hot water dispenser, as well to mix formula.  These dispensers are another luxury that I appreciate in some of the newer nursing rooms that I've visited over the past few months.  This means that you can mix formula and feed it to your little one fresh.  Given that the water is clean!

The dispenser is also good just for rehydrating your parched-self as well!  It's majorly hot these days…bless the Hong Kong summers…

Fourthly, the ultimate luxury for me in the K11 nursing room is the scale!  Every time I am in the area, I choose to visit the K11 mall just to be able to weigh my baby.  I like seeing how many pounds (and also grams) he weighs week by week.  It's a fun little thing to have in a nursing room!

A fifth amenity is the spacious leather double seat.  There is enough room to spread out all of the diaper bag necessities and also for a friend/spouse to chill out on.

The sixth amenity is the padded changing table.  Though pods are nice and do the job…having the luxury of a pad to lay a baby on is ideal.  I never have to worry about putting a blanket under the baby's head or lining the changing station with blankets to make the changing experience more comfortable…

K11 also provides disposable linings to put your blanket/baby on.  It makes it feel a bit more sanitary…but, that's just me!

The last amenity, this nursing room is a private one, so the door can be locked for privacy.  There is a 15 minute recommended limit though, but I have not really experienced being forced out of the nursing room.  I have not even heard anyone knock at the door.

If in need of a great nursing room, try asking the K11 concierge and they'll kindly direct you (that was my experience the first time I asked them!).
